Q. I'm 17, I've never in my life felt a baby, until recently my mom had a newborn baby boy. So I have a couple of questions, why do they sleep so much?! I swear I think this baby has been sleeping over 24 hours. Why is he do soft? And what's that thing at the top of his head? It feels like there's no skull there ._.
Answer
Baby's sleep so much because they are growing so much. Sleeping also helps them learn. I heard that when sleeping they are able to absorb and store what they saw/experienced when they were awake so they form memories of things and that's how they are able to remember what they learn.
Babies are so soft because their skin hasn't been through our harsh environments yet. Our skin changes as a reaction to our environments. For example, people who work with their hands a lot develop calluses as a way to resist the harmful effects of the environment to protect the rest of the body. Babies haven't been through anything yet, so their skin remains very soft. You will find that the skin that is less exposed to the elements will stay soft even longer than the skin that is.
The soft spots (fontanels) are where the skull has not fused yet. It is that way so that the baby can more easily fit through the birth canal. There is a spot at the top of the head and one on the back. Both should close fully around the baby's first birthday. In the meantime, be gentle if you touch them.
